Historically the University has endured several
years of intense and often difficult construction activity during
the brief vacation periods.
To meet its large accommodation requirements for
the future the University decided to review its traditional
procurement methods.
Using the guidance of the Rethinking Construction
Initiative the University decided to partner the provision of the
majority of its construction especially that of its summer
refurbishment projects.
In 2003 following our submission and an intense
interview Mulalley, who had a successful track record for this
Client, were delighted to be selected as the University’s
Contractor Partner.
The partnership required us to assist in the
preparation of technical briefs and then undertake several fast
track refurbishment and alterations projects to several of their
office and campuses across London. The original expectation was an
annual project spend of £1 million to be delivered in a 14 week
period. The University eventually required £4 million spend
delivered in just 30 weeks.
Due to the short lead in periods, initially wide
ranging briefs and the size and complexity of the works it
required all parties to work efficiently an with complete trust to
meet the critical completion dates. To assist, key parts of the
supply chain are also our partners and the team uses the ACA PPC
2000 form of contract.
Following the success of the above but with the
requirements to comply with the rules on public procurement a new
OJEU competition was held where Mulalley were appointed for a new
3 year partnership to undertake works to a value estimated at £20
million.
