This prestigious design and build scheme will
provide a much needed student residential block within a UCL
campus in the Bloomsbury conservation area.
The 8-storey building, situated within the
courtyard of an existing Hall of Residence in Fitzrovia central
London, will provide 91 additional study rooms. This 2400m2 block
abuts the new rear extension of the Grade 2 listed Indian YMCA.
It’s close proximity to occupied buildings and
very difficult access restrictions make it a logistically
challenging project with special consideration necessary for the
health and safety of existing occupants. Issues such as light
levels and the impact of overlooking buildings were also
considered as were the materials used which needed to be
complimentary to the YMCA building.
Rainwater harvesting and connection to a highly
efficient combined heat and power plant form part of the buildings
effective sustainability strategy.
The project started in Spring 2007 and is due for
completion by April 2008.
