November 2010 - Breaking ground at groundbreaking centre
Work has started on an ambitious new
Inclusive Learning Campus at Broadwater Farm in Tottenham - one of
the first of its kind anywhere in the country.
The new building in Adams Road, will bring
together learning experiences for children with different
educational needs under one roof. This includes a 100 place
special school formed by the primary departments of William C
Harvey and Moselle special schools; Broadwater Farm primary school
and the existing children's centre.
The new building will provide modern
teaching spaces around a central shared zone, housing a hall, gym,
library and hydrotherapy pool. Outside there will be an
amphitheatre, sensory garden, wildlife pond and horticultural
area, external teaching, hard and soft play areas, sand and water
play area and a multi-use games area.
On a tour of the site and the early work
Cllr Lorna Reith, Haringey's Cabinet Member for Children and Young
People, said: 'It's great to see this ambitious project really
coming to life. The new campus won't just give our young people a
fantastic environment for learning, but will also form a central
part of this community.'
The new 100 place special school will be
known as The Brook and its Headteacher Designate, Margaret Sumner,
said: 'Words used about this project - such as inspirational and
visionary - hardly come close to the real excitement now being
generated within the learning community as we watch our school
rising on Broadwater Farm.'
Headteacher of Broadwater Farm Primary
School, Dawn Ferdinand, added: 'This is it. The building for
present and future generations has begun. It will be the new
energy in the community which houses something for everyone to
grow in and enjoy. It is great to be part of the future vision for
Broadwater Farm.' Building contractors Mulalley are creating
the new campus - in Adams Road, Tottenham - in phases so as to
minimise disruption to the schools and the local community.
Mulalley Director John Moore said: 'The work
on the new Inclusive Learning Campus is off to a great start and
we can already see the how the building is going to take shape.
The pupils of each school have taken a keen interest in the works
and our vision panels around the site are being put to good use.
We see little faces through the panels every day checking on our
progress!'
Key dates for when and where the
work will take place are:
* By September 2011 - about half the new
building will be finished
* The second part of the work will be
completed by September 2012, with any remaining landscaping and
external works completed by early 2013.
